KitchenAid 5 Quart Mixer Review

Our Rating:

Food mixers are quite possibly a kitchen upgrade worth splurging on. While your kitchen may never be fancy enough to require a sous chef, I doubt any cook would pass on a little extra help when it's time to roll up sleeves and start cooking. Food mixers are by no means a sous chef, but they are great little kitchen helpers. And the KitchenAid 5 quart mixer is to be a great helper for any cook, fancy or not so fancy.

The 5 plus 5 is known and esteemed for it’s stability and solid craftsmanship. Cooks of all skill levels claim that this food mixer not only provides them with ample food preparation techniques and uses, but also saves them time in the kitchen.

Owners also report the mixer reducing the total time of their recipe's preparation and cooking periods. The KitchenAid KV25GOXER 5-Quart Stand Mixer is said to be both easy to operate and clean up when the cooking is completed.

Made in the USA?

KitchenAid has built a reputation around the stand food mixer for reliability, quality in design, ease of function, and long standing durability. The food mixer is sometimes advertised as made in the USA, but that is a bit misleading. Although most parts are manufactured in Ohio, South Carolina, Mississippi, Indiana, and Arkansas, and the mixers are assembled in the Ohio plant, some components are made in various manufacturing plants around the world.

KitchenAid has been in the business of manufacturing food mixers for almost 100 years, since 1919. Many consumers consider purchasing KitchenAid food mixers on reputation alone, but does it really live up to the expectations?

Included Mixer Attachments: Flat Beater, Wire Whisk, & Dough Hook

Three different mixing utensils for differing jobs are included and come standard with the purchase of each five plus mixer; the flat beater, spiral dough hook, and wire whip.

The white coated flat beater made from an epoxy, polyester hybrid powder coat is FDA approved and perfect for blending cake batters, whipping mashed potatoes, or mixing firm cookie dough. Whatever basic mixing is required, the beater paddle mixes quickly and thoroughly, touching 67 different points on the interior of the bowl as the mixing arm shaft rotates the paddle around inside the bowl. With the thorough mixing of the flat beater no ingredients clump up and stay unmixed.

The stainless steel six wire whipping whisk is ideal for dishes which require a lot of air infused into the mixture. Mousse, soufflé, meringues, and other recipes dependent on light fluffy textures from whipping action, all whip up quickly and easily.

The white coated spiral dough hook with the same coating mentioned earlier, works great when the job calls for kneading. Breads, biscuits, pie crusts, and rolls are just a few examples of what the 5 plus 5 can handle.

One reviewer did mention that the bread dough tended to ride up the dough hook when using the top 10 maximum speed setting which requires the cook to push the dough back down into the bowl. Having personally worked with various bread recipes in several different food mixers with kneading capabilities, I would say this is a common problem across the board. Because of safety reasons, bakers should never leave the mixer running without close supervision anyway. Pushing the bread dough back down should not be a big deal and should not slow the preparation time or effect the desired result of the finished product.

Another consumer review mentioned the 5 plus 5 doing the kneading much faster than she could manage by hand. She reduced her overall kneading time by half to a third shorter using the KitchenAid 5 plus 5 Professional Food Mixer.

Benefits To Bread Making

Dough Hook Perfect for Bread Making

The benefits of owning a food mixer for bread making are tremendous. Kneading by hand can be messy and laborious. With a food mixer kneading for the cook, all the mess stays in the bowl, so clean up is much quicker and the kitchen counter tops are freed up for other cooking needs. Plus, while the food mixer is kneading, the baker can begin or continue work on other recipes.

When I'm the cook, food mixers doing all the kneading (instead of me)is not just a perk, but a requirement. First of all, my arms are weak sauce. Even after carrying five babies around on my hip and dragging their car seats to the car on a routine basis over the past 14 years! Most of the time the bread I made when I hand kneaded came out looking more like a meatloaf than a fluffy delicious loaf of bread.

Bread Making

My first attempt at bread making back in 2006. The bread came out crumbly and flat.

But because I was determined for health reasons to provide my family with homemade, made from scratch bread, receiving a food mixer for Christmas from my husband brought me to tears, much like other women would respond when opening up a cute little velvety box with a satin ribbon and discovering something sparkly inside.

I didn't cry because I am a sap, (well maybe a little bit) but rather because at age 25 the first symptoms of an auto immune disease that causes arthritic type symptoms appeared. Soon the pain and swelling attacked my fingers, severely limiting the use of my hands. Even if my arms were strong enough to knead like a pro, my hands could not handle the task. My husband was a sweetie for supporting my desire to continue to make bread. He knew I needed help from a food mixer to get the kneading job done without dealing with joint pain.

homemade bread making

A more recent batch of my homemade bread with kneading done by my food mixer.                               The loaves come out fluffy, delicious, and beautiful.

I am thankful today to own several food mixers that get the job done for me, so I do not have to. Instead of baking becoming something to dread, bread making remains a fun and enjoyable experience. If you or someone you are looking to buy a food mixer for is dealing with kneading limitations, for any reason, I highly recommend upgrading the kitchen with a heavy duty food mixer like the KitchenAid 5 quart food mixer.

Ease Of Operation

The 5 plus 5 comes with a stainless steel 5 quart bowl fitted with an ergonomic handle making lifting the bowl off of the stand and handling the bowl while pouring or distributing the ingredients comfortable and easy. The bowl is also designed with a wide mouth for ease when adding ingredients during mixing.

Standard Wide Mouth 5 Quart Stainless Steel Mixing Bowl

Each beater, whether the flat paddle, wire whisk, or dough hook, provides unique mixing action for complete, thorough, and swift mixing of all ingredients. Which ever beater is in operation, the beater spins clockwise while the shaft spins counter clockwise making the mixer’s work seemingly effortless and smooth. There is no need for the cook to rotate or even touch the bowl because all the work is being done for them.

An electronic speed sensor maintains the selected speed even as ingredients are added and weight or density changes occur. Although there may be an occasional recipe where the ingredients scoot up the edges and require scraping, most recipes will virtually be hands free once the ingredients have been added to the bowl.

The flat beater come with in a dimes width to the edge of the interior of the bowl to provide ample coverage and proper mixing. Between                                                                                                                                                      1) the rotation of the shaft in counter action to the beater                                                                                                2) the 67 point touches the beater makes as it works its way around the inside of the bowl                      3) the distance in proximity the beater comes within reach to the bowl                                             cooks should have peace of mind that the ingredients are fully mixed and the work has been done well for them.

Changing out beaters by either removing the previously used beater or attaching a new beater is simple and manageable. While holding on to the beater, push up towards the shaft while rotating slightly clockwise and the beater will unlock from the shaft for easy removal. Simply reverse these instructions to attach the new beater called for.

Quick and Easy Beater Attachment or Removal

To remove or attach the bowl, either push down or up on the lever handle on the side of the mixer neck. When the lever is released, the bowl can be freed of the three contact points or of course locked into place at those points depending upon whether the bowl is being removed or locked in. The back of the bowl slips onto a knob on the neck of the mixer’s stand by way of a button spring snap. The two opposing sides of the bowl sit on heavy duty pins provided on each arm rest. Once the bowl is attached on all three points, the bowl is stable, secure, balanced, and solidly placed. Now, raising the bowl lever will assure smooth operation and proper mixing. To remove the bowl, making sure the lever is released and the bowl is in the down position, pull up on the bowl and the attachment points will release, freeing the bowl from the stand.
